   Brief description of the organisation: Aalborg University (AAU) was inaugurated in 1974 and is a young and modern university which, over the years, has grown to become a large, well-established research and teaching institution in Denmark offering quite an untraditional range of educational programmes and research in the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering, Science and Medicine. AAU has its main campus in Aalborg and regional campuses in Copenhagen and Esbjerg. Aalborg University is a dynamic institution, which continuously works at being at the cutting edge - regionally, nationally and internationally. Aalborg University is Denmark‟s larges IT university and has special expertise within food research and sustainable energy. Aalborg University is world known for its unique pedagogic model of teaching: the problem-based, project-organised model PBL (Problem-based Learning). The PBL-model integrates education and innovation in close cooperation with private and public enterprises.   AAU is home address for the National MANUFUTURE platform.    Brief description of the organisation: CBHU is an independent industrial, non-profit research and development organisation providing R+D,knowledge transfer and training services to a large number of food businesses. Key research activities include food safety, food processing and handling with particular focus to cold chain, heat processing, meat processing, product development, chain management, consumer and sensory science. Long experience in knowledge transfer/training to industry, auditing food safety management systems, application of food legislation, legality of labelling, implementing capacity building programmes for achieving compliance to trade standards and EU food legislation, good overview and understanding of practical problems, where the food industry needs practical solutions. CBHU has worked on several EU projects: SMEs-NET, TRUEFOOD, HELENA, AgriFoodResults, DREAM, Transparent_Food, NAMASTE, INPLISTA. It provides co-tutors since 5 years for the DG SANCO HACCP trainings for official food controllers (more than 60 courses).”

   Brief description of the organisation: INESC PORTO is a private, non-for-profit, research and technology transfer institution. As an interface organisation between university and industry, it puts together the creative capacity and deep knowledge of academic researchers with a professional approach to projects and problems by its contracted engineer specialists. INESC PORTO has presently around 400 researchers and gathers together 25 years of experience in fundamental and applied science and in technology transfer. During this period, it has accumulated a considerable expertise from its extensive participation in most of the European Union research programmes, being presently recognised as a reliable beneficiary of excellence with a very specific know how in a number of areas. Its technology transfer activity is intensive. It is based mainly on direct contracts with industry, service companies and government agencies, and includes services like technology licensing, consultancy, advanced training. Its clients are mainly based in Europe and America.

   Brief description of the organisation: SIK (The Swedish Institute for Food and Biotechnology AB; SIK – Institutet för Livsmedel och Bioteknik AB) is a private, non-profit, industrial research institute. SIK is a fully owned subsidiary of SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden (SP Sveriges Tekniska Forskningsinstitut). The purpose of the Institute is to strengthen the competitiveness of its member companies. The number of employees is approx. 100, most of whom are university graduates. The head office is in Gothenburg, with regional offices in Lund, Lindköping and Umeå. The core competence areas are food processing, food safety, food quality and environmental impact of food production. SIK conducts strategic and applied research for industry in accordance with a goal-oriented research programme and in the form of joint industrial projects. SIK has participated in more than 30 European projects in FP5, FP6 and FP7 and has successfully coordinated six of these. SIK has new technologies as one of the prioritised research areas. The department for process and technology development has strong expertise and experimental equipment for advanced heating and novel processing technologies. SIK has been pioneer on development of microwave and infrared processing in food applications. Since 2001, SIK has been organising the Food Factory of the Future conference, which is becoming an important forum for presenting scientific advances in the food industry, and for initiating new research projects on a European scale.

   Brief description of the organisation: DIL is a multi-disciplinary, membership based research institution fully integrated in the scientific community. With its‟ strong links to industry, DIL helps to increase the value of food and food ingredients. The principal function is the development of innovative processing technologies (for more functional and healthier foods) based on a sound knowledge of the inherent molecular structure, chemical properties and interactions of the material. Through network and training, these results are transferred to industry, hence bridging the gap between academia and practice and making DIL a driving force for food processing innovations. Member companies of DIL are form the food, feed and ingredient processing sector and from the equipment manufacture. By the latter the institute has a close link to the manufacturing sector.

    

8.  Agenzia Nazionale per le Nuove Technologie, L’Energia e lo Sviluppo Economico Sostenibile – ENEARome, Italy

   Brief description of the organisation: ENEA carries out basic and applied research and innovation technology activities, also through prototypes and product industrialisation; disseminates and transfers technologies, encouraging their use in productive and social sectors; provides high-tech services, studies, tests and evaluations to both public and private bodies and enterprises. ENEA's activities include research to advance the knowledge, development and transfer of multi-sectorial enabling technologies aimed at strengthening industrial research. Furthermore, ENEA, member of the EEN and TAFTIE -The Association for Technology Implementation in Europe (http://www.taftie.org/), carries out public-private initiatives through consortia and spin-offs. In FoodManufuture, several ENEA Units are involved: Sustainable development and innovation of the agro-industrial system (UTAGRI), Biotechnologies (UTTRI-BIOTEC), Technology Dissemination and Transfer (UTT-VALNET/PMI) and Models and Technologies for Environmental Assessment (UTVALAMB-LCA).

   Brief description of the organisation: Danish Technological Institute is an independent, non-profit organisation that has been authorised by the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The Institute is among the top five technology centres in Europe for applied research and technology development, and is dedicated to support innovation and productivity in small and medium sized enterprises in Denmark and internationally. We are one of the world‟s largest private institutes supplying approved technological services. On an annual basis, Danish Technological Institute has more than 14,000 customers. The Institute has established strong relationships with R&D institutions, policy institutes, consultancies and universities in Europe and adopts an interdisciplinary approach to innovation and to the task of improving the ability of small and medium size enterprises to exploit new technologies and management tools. Two centres at DTI will be involved in this study: The Danish Meat Research Institute (DMRI) is a key innovation driver within the Danish meat industry. With 100 specialists, the institute is the largest centre of excellence within research into food of animal. Our main R&D areas are: Automation manufacturing technology, Food safety, Meat quality, Sensor systems for food manufacturing, IT systems for shop floor manufacturing control. Further the DMRI provides R&D based consultancy services for the international food industry ensuring products meet the demands of international markets. Centre for Policy and Business Analyses, with a staff of 25 experts, has considerable socio-economic expertise with an emphasis on the role of skills, technology, innovation and competitiveness. When we design policy and strategy studies we put particular emphasis on interdisciplinary methods, both quantitative and qualitative, and semi-experimental models that can assist in bridging research, policy formulation and reflected innovation offering platforms for dialogue and interaction.

More than € 175 million is yearly invested in research projects on behalf of public and private beneficiaries. Today, Ghent University attracts ~30,000 students on a yearly basis, and has > 6500 staff members, of which ~910 professors. The Faculty of Bioscience Engineering is dealing with research on the production and processing of living matter, with a view of sustainably producing healthy and safe products. The Department of Agricultural Economics employs 50 people: 5 professors, 30 PhD-students, 10 researchers and 5 administrative staff members. The Division of Agri-Food Marketing and Chain Management led by Prof. Dr. Xavier Gellynck applies socio-economic and marketing techniques to agro-food in the broadest sense, performing supply chain analysis/management, innovation and network studies, consumer studies, feasibility analyses (cost-benefit), monitoring of waste treatment and sensory analysis.

    Brief description of the organisation: The Fraunhofer Institute of Systems and Innovation Research (ISI) investigates innovation processes at the interface of society, economy, policy and technology. To this end the institute applies interdisciplinary analytical, evaluation and foresight methods, such as innovation indicators, Delphi surveys, in-depth interviews, scenarios and system modelling. The Institute's interdisciplinary research teams focus on emerging technologies, industrial and service innovations, energy policy and energy systems, sustainability and infrastructure systems, innovation and technology management and foresight, policy and regions as well as regulation. The institute's ca. 100 researchers include natural scientists and engineers as well as economists and social scientists. They carry out about 280 research and counselling projects mainly for national and EU public sector but also for industrial associations and enterprises.

ITIA-CNR, contributing and supporting the European initiative MANUFUTURE, aimed at developing high added-value manufacturing based on research and innovation, works on the development of production systems and elements for knowledge-based factories, business models and related enabling technologies in tightened collaboration with research centres, university and enterprises on national, European and international level. On the basis of the new MANUFUTURE strategic vision, ITIA-CNR has focused its competences on the following applicative areas: microsystems, mechatronic knowledge-based systems, robotics, multi-layer adaptive control systems, virtual prototyping and integrated simulation of mechatronic manufacturing systems, lifecycle methods for the design and management of evolving products, processes and production systems, new organisational, management and business paradigms. These are underpinned by a strong programme of research and development, and include analysis and testing, product innovation, process validation, consultancy, auditing, and training. Many of its service activities are independently accredited and can be tailored to meet specific client needs. It also publishes leading industry guidance on best practice and legislation.
